A Sunny Day in Beverly Hills & Dinner at The Polo Lounge

I’ve always been fascinated by the glamour of Hollywood and Beverly Hills, so deciding to make Beverly Hills our base for this part of our holiday made me very happy indeed. Last time we visited we stayed right in Hollywood, which was exciting, but Beverly Hills is much prettier. The house we are renting is nestled right up in the hills with two beautiful terraces and is only ten minutes’ away from the iconic Rodeo Drive.

The Weekend Roundup No. 6

I’ve had a lot of emails about the photo I have been using for the roundup, and as some folks did guess, this is definitely one of my cousin Esther’s cakes! She is incredibly talented, and I can definitely testify that her cakes taste just as beautiful as they look. I’m sorry I have yet to make this into a proper button for The Weekend Roundup, but I just have not had time!
Once again we had some fabulous posts last week, and I enjoyed them all. If I have yet to leave you a comment, please do forgive me, I am trying to blog and comment as normal while on holiday, but I have found myself running out of time! I really do appreciate you linking up, and I do visit every post. I will be back to commenting on every post in a couple of weeks.
I have chosen a couple of posts to feature this week. The first is this delicious seasonal Blueberry and Mango Salad from Chaya at Bizzy B Bakes.

And these spicy Grilled Moroccan Chicken Kabobs from Elsa at Elsa’s Cooking Diary sound like the perfect seasonal dish for summer entertaining.

Going Home...And My Mom's Jam Muffins

It’s always bittersweet visiting Canada now that my parents have passed away, but we really did have a wonderful visit this time, and I so enjoyed catching up with so many friends and family. The photos above were taken in Victoria Park, a place I spent a lot of time in when I was growing up. It’s gorgeous in the summer, and there is a fantastic play area for kids, with a mini water park and adventure play area as well as swings, slides etc. In the winter, when the lake would freeze, we would go skating on it. I vividly remember the coat my Mom used to wear and how tightly I would hold her hand.

A Wonderful Family Brunch Featuring Lemon Blueberry Waffles

My cousin Esther and her family hosted Sunday brunch after the big family party on Saturday for all of us who had stayed locally. (We were pretty local - we actually stayed with them!) We all had a lovely time. It was so nice to spend some more time catching up, reminisce about the party the day before, and also days gone by! When you live a long way from your family, times like these are extra special, and we really did enjoy every minute. And as usual at Esther’s house, the food was just amazing. She really is a hostess with the mostess, and an absolutely wonderful cook.

The One and Only Hearth and Soul Blog Hop

Hearth and Soul Hop at the 21st Century Housewife

I’m having a fantastic time in Canada catching up with family and friends. We had a wonderful weekend in Sarnia, and are now back in my home town on our way to Toronto to see yet more lovely people! On Friday we fly to Los Angeles, and are looking forward to chilling out at a house we have rented in Beverly Hills for a few days, as well as doing some sightseeing. Then it’s on to San Diego and BlogHer ’11!
All this visiting and catching up, much of which has centred round celebration and food, has reminded me how important food is to us - not just in terms of survival, but also in terms of memory, connection and yes, even love.  And that is what the Hearth and Soul Blog Hop is all about. Food from the hearth, to feed your soul - the food of memory, the food of hope, the food of comfort and of joy. To read our full mission statement and the rules for linking, please click here
It was such a pleasure visiting the links last week, and reading about other people’s special recipes and experiences round food. I enjoyed all the posts I visited, and highlights include:

A Fantastic Weekend With Family and A Yummy Recipe

We’ve been having a wonderful time with family in Sarnia, Ontario. It’s a beautiful part of Canada, right on the edge of majestic Lake Huron. We’ve had time to relax, refresh and catch up with some lovely people we have not seen in a couple of years - far too long in my opinion!
We’ve also had some fantastic food. All of my cousins are fantastic cooks, particularly my cousins Esther and Dawn. I’ve got more of Esther’s recipes to share later, but today I am sharing one of my cousin Dawn’s today

Ina Garten's Old Fashioned Banana Cake

I belong to a group called Ina’s Garden . We ‘meet’ on the first and third Thursdays of every month to share our experiences Ina Garten’s wonderful recipes. We would love for you to join us.
This time we are cooking around the theme Sweet Baked Love. The Ina Garten recipe you share can be anything baked, from cookies, to a cake or pie. Even pizza is baked, so you could include things like that too. As for me, I chose Ina’s Old Fashioned Banana Cake from her new book Barefoot Contessa - How Easy Is That

Breakfast, Lunch or Brunch?

Let's Do Brunch!

I’m packing like crazy for our holiday. I don’t know why I find packing so daunting all the time - we travel so much it should be easy! I’ll be blogging absolutely as normal while we are away - my husband has the sort of job where he tends to do two or three hours work every day even when he is on holiday, and blogging means I can sit down with him and we can work together. We are probably among the only people who choose their hotels based on the quality of not only their surroundings and service, but also of their internet connections!
What have you been cooking in your kitchen? I’ve been working on my Family Food History and Recipe Project again, with some delicious results. I’m looking forward to blogging more about it my in the near future.
Last week we had 40 wonderful links, and we are hoping for even more this week, so please spread the word among your bloggy friends!

Nigella Lawson's Tarragon Chicken

This is another recipe from Nigella Lawson’s most recent book, Kitchen. I love all of Nigella’s books, but I do think this is one of her best. I was drawn to this recipe as it is a much easier, less time consuming version of a French classic, poulet a l’estragon, which I have made in the past. This version is every bit as good as the more difficult original, and a lot quicker and less stressful to make.
You may be surprised to see that Nigella lists both fresh and dried tarragon in the ingredients. Although I have made this recipe solely with dried tarragon when fresh was unavailable, Nigella is right when she says

The Hearth and Soul Blog Hop No. 57

Hearth and Soul Hop at the 21st Century Housewife
Welcome to the 57th edition of the wonderful Hearth and Soul Blog Hop! It’s another busy week here. Our decorator is back, and I’ve been meeting with the interior designer today as they try to get the living room finished before Friday, when my family and I go on holiday. I’m packing my husband’s bag for a short business trip (he gets home Thursday night) as well as packing for our holiday, sorting out the garden (which is now drowning - I wish we could send some of this rain to the folks who have drought!), re-organising our newly decorated rooms, baking, writing, well, everything except sleeping really! Oh, and I’m getting ready for BlogHer ’11 in San Diego at the end of our holiday, my first blogging conference ever! I’m SO excited! I do hope I will get to meet up with some of you there.
It’s when I am this busy that I really crave comfort food - and I know I will find lots of great inspiration from all your links. Last week’s links were fantastic.

Meatless Monday - Cheesy Tomato Vegetable Sauce

This is a delicious vegetarian sauce that can even be suitable for vegans if you use a vegan cream cheese. Rich and delicious, it works well with any pasta, including the spinach ravioli in the photograph above. Canned passata (sieved tomatoes) means the sauce doesn’t take a long time to make, but still tastes fresh and delicious. In fact, many of the Italian cooks I have spoken tell me they prefer good canned tomatoes or passata to fresh tomatoes, both for ease, and in terms of flavour. To read more, please click here...

My Mom's Blueberry Muffins

There are so many blueberry muffin recipes out there, it would probably be impossible to count them, but I think this is one of the best. It’s easy, amazingly delicious, and out of season you can use frozen blueberries with no problems whatsoever. It takes a grand total of about ten minutes to mix together, so within half an hour you can have hot, fresh muffins using ingredients you probably already have on hand.
