Favourite Autumn Apple Recipes

British Food Fortnight, a celebration of regional and seasonal British food, is on now, and runs until 2nd October. Among other things, its aim is to inform and educate about our regionally distinct produce as well as highlighting the health benefits of local, seasonal food.

It is a great time to celebrate some little known facts about British Food. For example, did you know that here in Britain we produce 700 different named cheeses? That’s more than France! Plus, our climate allows us to produce a huge variety of vegetables and fruit, and because of this our growing season lasts virtually all year. British farmers and artisanal producers grow a huge range of produce including 350 different types of potato and 2,000 different varieties of apples. Some of the apple trees are hundreds of years old, and many of our apples are grown from original stock.

As one of the aims of British Food Fortnight is to highlight seasonal food, and this is very much the season for British apples, I’ve thought I would put together a post with some of the apple recipes I have featured previously here on The 21st Century Housewife.

Red Carpet Ready - A Step Forward for Real Beauty

I’ve been writing a lot about unrealistic representations of beauty in advertising and the press recently. Today I am excited to be able to share a piece that I believe represents a real step forward from Gwyneth Paltow’s GOOP website.
In an ‘Emmys Scrapbook’, a post about her preparations for her appearance on the recent Emmy Awards, Ms Paltrow is brutally honest about the work that goes into making her red carpet ready - from her two hour 7 am workout to her last minute makeup touch ups before going on stage several hours later.

Gorgeous Floral Arrangements and Some Wonderful Tips from Green Parlour Flower School

I must admit, I was very nervous before I attended a recent flower arranging day at Green Parlour. I really didn’t feel that I  knew where to start when arranging flowers. Luckily, many of the others attending felt exactly the same way. We needn’t have worried as we were all immediately made to feel comfortable and Emma, the owner of Green Parlour, is a fantastic teacher.

Emma showed us, step by step, how to make two large and three small arrangements during an informal, fun and informative day that included tea, cakes and a lovely lunch.

The Million Moms Challenge

Every 90 seconds, a woman dies during pregnancy or childbirth. Most of these deaths are in the developing world.
Almost 9 million children, mostly in the developing world, die each year before their 5th birthdays - that’s more than 24,000 children each day - from largely preventable causes.
It’s shocking, and something needs to be done. Thankfully solutions are not that far off. By providing more access for moms to medical information, trained support during childbirth and proper nutrition and care for newborns, the lives of so many moms and babies in the developing world can be saved.
The Million Moms Challenge is a call to action to engage a million American moms with millions of moms like me in the UK, Europe and overseas, to raise awareness of the challenges facing moms and babies in the developing world. Spearheaded by ABC News and the UN Foundation, in partnership with Johnson & Johnson, Baby Centre and others, the campaign is being launched today in New York on the Good Morning America television programme. As I write this, moms and other supporters are gathering in Times Square for the launch.
The Million Moms Challenge Website is now live. Want to be one in a million?
Tell your friends.
Tweet about it #MillionMomsChallenge #amillionmoms @amillionmoms
You don’t have to be a mom to help a mom. You just have to be one in a million.

British Food Fortnight

Yesterday marked the start of British Food Fortnight and this year’s event is the biggest national celebration of British Food anywhere. Everyone from The Royal Family, Downing Street, Harrods and even St Paul’s Cathedral and St Pancras Station are getting involved, not to mention lots of universities, schools, restaurants, pubs, and shops. During this tenth anniversary year, thousands of activities are taking place across the country, with food and drink festivals, special menus in pubs and restaurants, promotions and events right up until 2nd October.

Post Number 803!

I just noticed that The Gallery of Favorites post I uploaded a few minutes ago was post number 802 on this blog! I often wonder how many blog posts and articles I have actually written! As most of you know, my main blog is at The 21st Century Housewife, where I have been blogging since 2002.

Of course, it would be impossible to store every single post on the server, so the actual blog archive on my main site only goes back a few years, but on my own personal storage, I still have every single post archived and stored from the last (nearly) 10 years. Some day I'll have to count them! Plus, of course, there are all my posts at The 21st Century Housewife's Kitchen that I would need to include as well.

I am so excited for 2012, and the Tenth Anniversary of The 21st Century Housewife. I can't wait to share the celebrations with you all. It's going to be a really great year.

In the meantime, a huge thanks to everyone for all your wonderful and continued support. All my sites across the web are now visited by over 150,000 readers each month from over 100 countries around the world. It's amazing when I think where I started, one of the first 'bloggers' on the web, all those years ago. Remember, if it doesn't say April Harris on the site, it isn't the official The 21st Century Housewife!

We had some wonderful posts last week - the foodies in us were out in force which is always fun! This week Alea and I want to highlight Chopped Salad with Blackberries from Susannah’s Kitchen

In England, blackberries are the quintessential autumn fruits, and people go to great lengths to source them on the hedgerows, as well as buying the cultivated varieties. However they are mainly used in desserts here, pies, crumbles and cakes. The idea of using blackberries in a lovely sweet and savoury salad sounds really inspired, and I’m eager to give it a try.

The Gallery of Favorites will remain open for entries until Monday.

National Cupcake Week

It's National Cupcake Week here in the UK. This week long celebration of all things cupcake features special events and promotions taking place in craft and high street bakeries across the UK, alongside a series of special programmes on Food Network. Also, a number of craft bakery and ingredients suppliers have joined in to help raise money for National Cupcake Week's partner charity CLIC Sargent, which supports children with cancer.

So, I decided to join in and make some cupcakes. To read more, please click here....

Fresh Peach Cake for Ina's Garden

This is my contribution to this week’s Ina’s Garden group, for which the theme is Cooking in Comfort. Comfort food has many connotations. In general, I suppose it often refers to savoury food - rich, meltingly tender stews, hearty soups or a decadently rich macaroni and cheese. But comfort food to me can also be desserts and treats - a rich chocolate brownie, a silky pudding or a piece of homemade cake - made all the more special by the fact that these are occasional treats. I have to confess that for me, the ultimate comfort food is a piece of delicious cake, so when given a theme that involved comfort, I was bound to choose something like Ina’s Fresh Peach Cake.

Endangered Species Women

When I wrote a blog post recently about Real Beauty, I received many of emails in response to it. One of those emails, from Gillian Byers of Mindfully Active, included the ‘Imagine’ video above. I was so moved by what Emma Thompson said I just had to share it.
Endangered Species Women is an international summit, launched in March of this year with the aim of saving future generations of girls from the misery that turns women against their own bodies.

Poached Pears

I love poached pears. If they are a dessert option on a restaurant menu, that is what I will always choose. It doesn’t honestly matter what they are poached in - red wine and cinnamon, white wine, or even just plain water and sugar. I love them. Seriously, have you ever had a poached pear with chocolate syrup? Warm or cold, softly poached fruit with chocolate syrup trickling down over the top? It’s pure ambrosia, and you get to feel good about choosing a fruit dessert.
I had, however, never poached pears myself.

Powerful Skin Care that Celebrates You

Not long ago I came across a skin and body care brand that I am very excited about. Regular readers will know that I am passionate about encouraging women to celebrate their own unique beauty. Mama Mio have a very similar outlook. Unlike many traditional brands, that make us feel bad about ourselves so that they can ‘fix’ us, Mama Mio’s mission is ‘to help women feel more confident in their skin’.

The Hearth and Soul Blog Hop with The 21st Century Housewife

Hearth & Soul Hop

Welcome to another Hearth and Soul Hop, the blog carnival for and about food that nourishes both body and soul.
My highlights from last week seem to reflect a concentration on comfort food - probably because our weather has mostly been wet and rainy. It definitely feels autumnal here in England, and these are the sort of things I have been craving...
Baked BBQ Onion Rings from Debbie Does Dinner...
Zucchini Muffins from Trilogy Edibles
Squash Cookies from The Pioneer Cook
and Tunisian Cake from Elsa’s Cooking Diary
You can also check out our Hearth and Soul Facebook Page and Pinterest Boards for more highlights, and please do come and follow us on Twitter  @HearthNSoulHop.

The Gallery of Favorites Third Edition

Gallery of Favorites

Alea of Premeditated Leftovers and I want to welcome you to the third edition of our weekend blog hop, The Gallery of Favorites.
The Gallery of Favorites is a place for you to feature favorite posts from your own blog. Although Alea and I both spend a lot of our time writing about food, we do have many other interests and we know our readers do as well. The Gallery of Favorites is a place for all bloggers - not just food bloggers - to share their ideas, interests and passions.
This is the place to share posts you are proud of. Aside from being family friendly, there are no rules. Posts don’t have to be perfect. We are all in this together, and we just want you to share your favorite posts with us.
There were some wonderful posts last week. Alea and I have chosen two posts to feature.
Photo credit Flickr user John Starnes
In Don’t Waste Your Pain , Melissa of Frugal Creativity movingly explores what happened when she asked God to use her as she underwent radiation therapy for breast cancer.
Adrienne of Whole. New .Mom writes openly about her experience with son, and how having a special needs child can be a blessing all its own in Special Needs Children - A Sign From God.
Both posts are beautifully written, and contain powerful lessons. Alea and I were struck by the way they so beautifully conveyed the message of how, even while struggling with something yourself, you can still help others.

What have you been focusing on this week? Share your favorite post!
The Gallery of Favorites will remain open for entries until Sunday evening.
Include a link to your favorite post, rather than to your blog.
Include a link to one of the hosts in your post, either through text or with a button.
We hope that you will take the time to visit some of the other entries in our Gallery of Favorites. It is a great way to discover new writers, or a new side to some of your favorite bloggers.
