How To Survive Holiday Shopping

It may seem a bit early to be writing about Christmas shopping, but I have to be honest, I’ve nearly finished mine. I love the Holidays, but while I may dream of wafting around a beautifully decorated mall, easily choosing present after present and ticking names off my list, that image used to be a long way away from reality for me. I’ve learned through bitter experience that shopping early is the only way. I can’t bear the thought of struggling for a parking space, fighting my way through the crowds and being caught in the last minute rush.

Some of My Favourite Meatless Recipes

We’ve had lots of visitors recently, so I have not had a chance to blog some of the Meatless Mondays recipes I have been working on yet. So today I am sharing some of my most popular Meatless Monday posts from my archives.
I’ve been participating in the Meatless Monday and Meat Free Monday movements for some time now, and I feel it is really important that we all reduce the amount of meat in our diet. I’m certainly not ready to espouse a completely vegetarian lifestyle, but I know that  eating meatless meals at least one day a week benefits not only my health, but also the environment and the health of our planet. It also benefits my food budget!
It doesn’t have to be a Monday; just choose one day a week to go meat free. These easy and delicious recipes can help to get you started.

A Lovely Evening of Food and Coffee Matching

Last week I was invited to a food and coffee matching event at L’atelier des Chefs by the wonderful people at Cafédirect. Along with other members of the London blogging community, I was challenged to create a dessert to match one of the single origin coffees in less than an hour. We were set to work in groups of two and I was paired with another blogger with the same name, April of Rhubarb and Rose, to work on this challenge.

Love Your Body Day

Today is the National Organization of Women’s Love Your Body Day, and this post is part of the 2011 Love Your Body Day Blog Carnival
I’ve written quite a lot about body image recently, including a piece on Real Beauty and Endangered Species Women, as well as the Just As You Are page, which has been on this site for a number of years. I also recently wrote another post about Love Your Body Day in which I discussed how advertisers portray women, and how this affects us, as well as our daughters and sons. I am passionate about empowering women to love their bodies, mainly because low self image is something I have struggled with for most of my life.

National Chocolate Week

It’s National Chocolate Week here in the UK and there are special events taking place all week, culminating in Chocolate Unwrapped at Vinopolis in London this weekend. This seems the perfect excuse to indulge in a chocolatey treat, and for these purposes I see no reason why National Chocolate Week should not be declared an international event!
Need some inspiration? Try some of the delicious chocolate treats which I’ve shared on The 21st Century Housewife over the years.

The NOW Foundation Love Your Body Campaign

I’ve written quite a lot about body image recently, including a piece on Real Beauty and Endangered Species Women, as well as the Just As You Are page, which has been on this site for a number of years.
A few days ago, I came across The National Organisation of Women’s Love Your Body Campaign. Their major concern is how advertisers target women and young girls by making us feel inadequate, one of my pet peeves. They have named October 19th as Love Your Body Day, in the hope of raising awareness of how we are being marketed to, and to encourage us to feel better about ourselves.
I downloaded their PDF presentation of Sex, Stereotypes and Beauty, The ABCs and Ds of Commercial Images of Women, and I confess I was shocked.

A Place in the Sun

Beginning Friday, October 7 more than 40 million people will be able to start their weekends with A Place in the Sun, a half-hour eclectic reality series based on the adventure of finding a home abroad. As a big fan of the UK show, which is the number one property show in the world, I can assure you this is very good news indeed!
The first season takes viewers on a breathtaking voyage across the globe from Belize to Nicaragua, Mexico, Argentina, Greece, Croatia, New Zealand, Italy and beyond. Recently, I was given the opportunity to interview Danielle Robb, Executive Producer and host of the U.S. version of the show.

Ina's Garden

Welcome to another edition of Ina’s Garden, the group that celebrates The Barefoot Contessa.
We have two exciting changes to the group to announce. The first is that we will only be meeting once a month from now on, on the first Thursday of every month. The second is that we will no longer be following themes - instead you can link any Ina Garten recipe, blog post or book review that you like to the linky.

The Palace, The Dress and A Very Spectacular Cake

Photo April Harris
Over the years, I’ve been privileged to visit the State Rooms in Buckingham Palace a few times, including on smaller, after hours tours with fewer than 20 other people, so I know them pretty well, but they never fail to take my breath away. Once, after one of the smaller tours, we were given a glass of champagne to drink in the Bow Room surrounded by history and looking out onto the fabulous gardens. We were then escorted out in small groups through the huge quadrangle, under the famous balcony and past the guards at the side gate. The tourists outside the gates were going mad with their cameras, thinking we were famous, and

Lovely Autumn Pear Recipes

Last week I wrote about some of my Favourite Apple Recipes, and today I want to showcase some of the recipes I have developed using another autumn classic - pears.

Pears have been around for a long time. In fact, one of the earliest literary references to them is in Homer’s Odyssey. It is believed that they were cultivated in England from the time of the Roman occupation and we have literally hundreds of varieties of pears being grown here. They really come into their own in the autumn, and are available in abundance. Most countries in the world grow several varieties of pear, and they are even recognised by the FDA as one of the 20 most popular fruits in the USA.
