Delicious Christmas Loaf

This is my new favourite go-to recipe for Christmas. A slice of Cranberry Orange and Ginger Loaf is perfect with a hot drink for a slightly indulgent breakfast or alongside a cup of tea for dessert or a snack.

Sugar Cookies

This Christmas finds me in a nostalgic sort of mood and this picture brings back fond memories; it was taken after a day of cookie baking and decorating back when my son was little. I originally posted this recipe a number of years ago but I wanted to share it again as it has been a classic in my family’s kitchens for generations.

A Peak into our Second Home

In my post New Beginnings a few days ago, I shared our son’s upcoming adventure as he heads to Canada to study photography, and our trip there to set up a family base there for him to live in full time and for us when we visit. We’ve come a long way from the photograph above, which shows us viewing the apartment we eventually chose.

A New Beginning

Regular readers will know that my son is heading to Canada to study Photography, and that we have been spending a lot of time finding a Canadian base for him, and for us when we visit.  It’s a new beginning for our family, alternatively exciting, terrifying and just a little bit emotional.

Mincemeat Cake

This is THE cake for people who don’t like fruitcake. It’s got all the Christmassy flavours we crave without the heaviness of a typical dark fruitcake.

Stir Up Sunday

Today is Stir Up Sunday - the last Sunday of the Christian Church year, leading to the first Sunday in Advent next week. The ‘stir up’ refers to the Collect for today which begins “Stir up, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people”. Today is also traditionally the day for making Christmas puddings (stir up referring in this to the pudding batter) so that they have time to mellow and age before Christmas. A pudding could be made any time in the next week and still have time to age properly.

The Importance of Story Time During the Holidays

I have fond memories of my parents and grandparents reading Christmas stories to me when I was a child. From gentle storybooks depicting the Nativity to ‘A Visit from St Nicholas’ by Clement C Moore, I loved them all. As I got older I enjoyed Dr Seuss’ ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas’ and especially ‘Yes, Viriginia, There is a Santa Claus’. Story time was also a big part of the holidays when my son was growing up, and he still remembers the stories we shared.

A Warming Stew Perfect for Entertaining

Beef in Red Wine is one of my go to comfort food dinners, but it’s also special enough for entertaining. While it involves a bit of work at the beginning and the end, the long slow cooking means that it’s pretty hands off for a good portion of the prep time. If you prefer you can even make this stew the day before, cool it quickly and refrigerate if for a day or so.

Yogurt Cake with Apples and Cinnamon

Photos Alex Harris
Yogurt gives cakes a lovely texture and moistness as well as a tiny bit of tang that really enhances their flavour. Quick and easy to throw together, this is the perfect autumn cake for absolutely any time of day...

West Berkshire - The Place Where I Live

Photos copyright April Harris The 21st Century Housewife

This post is the fifth in a new series of posts called The Place Where I Live. Learning a bit about the place people call home is a great way to get to know them better, and also makes a wonderful resource of insider knowledge for places you might like to visit one day. (If you love the place where you live, and would like to write a guest post in this series please email me.)  I live in West Berkshire...

Veggie Pasta Risotto

Photo Alex Harris
Risotto is classic comfort food but it can take a while to prepare, something that is less than desirable when you are actually in need of comfort food. While mindless repetitive stirring can be comforting in its own way, there is something to be said for comfort food fast.

Disney's Winnie the Pooh Storytelling Academy

Disney research shows that busy parents are struggling to find the time for storytelling so they recently launched the Winnie the Pooh Storytelling Academy. The Academy is an online resource offering a wide range of tips, tricks and guidance designed to show modern parents how both traditional and modern multimedia storytelling techniques can help them achieve a rich, shared family story time experience whether at home or away.

Sweet Potato Cranberry Bread

Recently I accumulated a surfeit of sweet potatoes. I have a regular organic vegetable and fruit delivery and it seems sweet potatoes are very much in season. My favourite way to serve them is to roast the sweet potatoes along with ordinary potatoes and other vegetables, but as much as my family enjoy roast vegetables, I could see that there was some boredom setting in. Even I was getting a bit fed up. So when I came across a recipe for Cranberry Sweet Potato Bread in my Betty Crocker cookbook, I was intrigued.

My Maple Pecan Bran Muffins

I have been making Bran Muffins ever since I was a little girl and they are a real family favourite. The only thing is, the recipe calls for a whole cup of brown sugar which has always worried me a bit. I regularly cut it back to three-quarters of a cup without affecting the recipe, but even that is still a lot of sugar for a muffin that contains so many other healthy ingredients.

A review of My Father's Daughter by Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow’s cookbook was published in the UK as ‘Notes from My Kitchen Table’, but I took pains to get hold of an American copy of the book as I loved the title ‘My Father’s Daughter’. Having lost my own Dad four years before, I really identified with the idea of writing something as a tribute to someone she loved so much. When I bought the book I did not know that I would later have a chance to meet Gwyneth in person.

Italian Breakfast Banana Bread

Nigella Lawson is definitely my all time favourite cookery writer. You can read her books like novels, and the recipes are virtually foolproof. I was so pleased when my copy of her new book Nigellissima arrived, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the television series that accompanies the book as well. There is also an amazing Nigellissima App with recipes, videos and more. It’s one of the best cookbook apps I have found so far.

Milder Honey Mustard Chicken

I love mustard in all it’s forms, from French’s mustard right on up to gourmet Dijon varieties infused with herbs. Unfortunately other members of my family do not share my passion and recipes with mustard actually in the title are rarely greeted with enthusiasm. When I do cook with mustard I need to either use it in very limited quantities or soften its bite with cream.
