On The Future of Food

‘On The Future of Food’ is a book containing the text of a speech given by HRH The Prince of Wales at The Future of Food conference in Washington, DC last year. Neatly sandwiched between an informative forward by Wendell Berry and well thought out afterward by Will Allen and Eric Schlosser, this book is a valuable resource and its publication by Rodale is something I think may well be looked back on as a turning point in years to come.

Vacations on a Dime with Danielle Robb

Photo credit A Place in the Sun
Danielle Robb is the executive producer and host of A Place in the Sun, an eclectic lifestyle, property, and travel show on Discovery’s Velocity Network. A Place in the Sun is dedicated to helping home buyers break boundaries in their own lives, while searching for affordable property around the world either for relocation, as an investment property, or as a vacation home. A travel expert, Danielle has very kindly agreed to share her latest and greatest picks for Weekend Vacations on a Dime with us here at The 21st Century Housewife. Although obviously geared to readers in North America as weekend destinations, they would still make great vacation destinations for those of us based further away - we would just need to allow a little more time! Cleanercise with Ecover

I’ve done promotional work for Ecover here on The 21st Century Housewife before, and I use their products in my own home, but I have to admit that when they contacted me about Cleanercise, I had my doubts. Seriously, wasn’t this just another gimmick? Fronted by Frankie, one of the professional ice skaters in Dancing on Ice, Cleanercise promises to ‘help boost happy hormones, tone wobby bits and put a smile on faces across the nation’. All this while I’m doing one of my least favourite jobs – cleaning. I wasn’t so sure.

Special Can Be Easy

Special days like Valentine’s Day can put a lot of pressure on couples, especially when they fall in the middle of a busy working week. Going out seems a bit impractical - especially on a very commercial holiday like Valentine’s when prices are inflated and restaurants are busy - but slaving in the kitchen for hours doesn’t hold much appeal either. It doesn’t have to be that way though. Whether it’s an anniversary, a special birthday or any mid-week celebration, there are easy ways to make it memorable. Last night I prepared a three course Valentine’s Day dinner in a little over an hour, with a little help from some of my easy but still impressive recipes, and some wonderful local suppliers.

Molten Chocolate Babycakes for Valentine's Day

This is another recipe via the wonderful Nigella Lawson, from her book How to Be A Domestic Goddess. This has to be one of my most used cookbooks, and it is has the flour marks and batter splotches on it to prove it! If you do not have it in your cookbook collection, I urge you to get hold of a copy as soon as you can. Aside from the delicious recipes, Nigella’s writing style is a delight, and for me this book is as much a treasured reading companion as a recipe tome. But on to the Babycakes.

I made these in honour of Valentine’s Day, and so I chose to use my heart shaped Le Creuset custard dishes. I can’t think of any dessert more appropriate for Valentine’s Day than something soft, voluptuous and chocolatey like this.

Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton, A Diamond Jubilee Celebration

Yesterday I attended a preview of Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton, A Diamond Jubilee Celebration, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Sir Cecil Beaton was a photographer, illustrator, designer and artist whose career took off in the 1920’s. Working for Vogue, he became one of the leading fashion photographers of the era, but his biggest break occurred in 1939 when the Queen (mother of our current Queen) asked him to take her portrait. It was the beginning of an enduring relationship with the Royal Family. Beaton portrayed the royals as no one had ever done before, and was a huge part of transforming the image of the monarchy through some of the more difficult periods of the twentieth century, including the Second World War.

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee

2012 is a year of celebration for the United Kingdom. Not only are we hosting the Olympics, but this is the year our Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee. More than just a figurehead, our Queen is a well-loved monarch, whose life has been a wonderful example of duty and service. It’s only the most churlish of British republicans who cannot bring themselves to raise a glass in celebration of her 60 year reign. As for the royalists among us, we can’t wait to break out the champagne!

Diamond Jubilee celebrations are planned all year. To read more, please click here...

Banana Oatmeal Raisin Muffins

I always like to be sure that the muffins I bake have something in them that is good for you, and recently I’ve been experimenting with oats. I make bran muffins regularly, but I rarely use oats, and they really are good for you too. Like bran, oats are a wonderful source of dietary fibre, and they also contain beneficial phytochemicals and proteins as well as thiamin, folic acid and vitamin E. Plus they have a low glycemic index, which helps keep you fuller longer.

I’ve always loved the combination of oatmeal and raisins in cookies so I decided to experiment. Three test batches later, these muffins were judged the best by my very patient recipe testers. The brown sugar gives a lovely, treacly sweetness and the spices and flavouring really make these muffins special.

Works for You

Everybody needs a little help from time to time, and I am no exception. The lovely photograph you see above is the ‘after’ photo of our garage. I’m not even sure I want to show you the ‘before’, but I’m going to swallow my pride and do it. Gulp.
