Jane & Marilyn - Fabulous 1950's Inspired Fashion for Real Women

Photo courtesy of Jane & Marilyn

Do you find dressing for special occasions challenging? Finding something high quality that fits well and suits the occasion can make shopping more of a chore than a pleasure. I want to wear clothes I love for years, changing accessories with the seasons to give them a new look and feel, but with some companies’ throw-away attitude to fashion that can be challenging.

Moussaka Style Pasta Bake

I love traditional Moussaka but when I’m looking for quick and easy, sometimes it involves a bit more work than I would like. I developed this pasta bake for busy evenings, and I like it because it holds well in the oven - great if you are not exactly sure what time dinner is going to be! Leftovers are delicious the next day too.

Vegetarian French Onion Soup

This recipe is a bit of a rebellion. I was told on many occasions that it wouldn’t work, particularly when I spoke to people in France. You see, not only did I want to dispense with the hearty beef broth that is so integral to French Onion Soup, I wanted to make a homemade version that didn’t require hours of sautéing and simmering. I didn’t, however, want to lose the hearty flavour or the comfort food factor. Let’s face it, what is better than a steaming hot bowl of French onion soup, the crouton melting into the onion-y broth, melted cheese clinging to your spoon?

Supporting Better Dairy

Did you know that while specific European Union (EU) regulations exist to safeguard other farm animals, dairy cows have no such protection? This means that welfare standards vary greatly across the EU, with some dairy cows suffering from poor health, inadequate housing and lack of access to pasture. ‘Supporting Better Dairy’, a collaboration between leading animal welfare charities Compassion in World Farming, and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), along with ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s, has today launched a campaign to improve standards for dairy cows across Europe.

Meatless Monday - Mediterranean Wheat Berry Casserole

Photo Alex Harris

We eat pretty well in our house, but I’m always trying to increase the number of healthy foods in our diet. My husband and son always tease me about it. The first time I made this casserole, my husband said that if we’d left the wheat berries uncooked we might have been able to make Sugar Puffs cereal from them, and my son put ketchup on them - but both of them cleaned their plates!

Up until very recently, we had never tried wheat berries. Then my husband and I tasted them in in a restaurant, and we were pleasantly surprised. Wheat berries are are entire wheat kernels, containing all the goodness of the whole grain.

Finally Planting

Photo Guy Harris

This is my 1000th post on this Blogger blog, which I started four years after I established my website The 21st Century Housewife in 2002. I started this Blogger blog to encourage traffic to my main website, and also to protect my copyright of The 21st Century Housewife. I have no idea how many posts would be on the main site starting back from 2002, as in fact some of them were archived when I redesigned The 21st Century Housewife in 2008.

Another redesign of The 21st Century Housewife is planned in the near future, with a migration to Wordpress, in this my tenth anniversary year. Thank you so much for supporting me over the years, and I look forward to many more happy years blogging as The 21st Century Housewife.

After announcing a drought and forbidding the use of hoses as spring began, many of Britain’s water companies were left with egg on their faces when it rained almost non-stop for several weeks. The odd week of warmth and sunshine was followed by cold - even freezing - temperatures.  Even now, mid-way through June, most days seem more autumnal than spring-like.  Only as the weather finally begins to break can gardeners risk planting up their vegetable beds.

Meatless Monday - A Vegetarian Breakfast

A ‘full English breakfast’ is a real tradition here in England. However its menu of bacon, sausages, fried eggs and sometimes even black pudding (possibly the least vegetarian food in the world) really does leave those who don’t eat meat out in the cold. While many restaurants do try to create a vegetarian version of this classic, I’ve never found one as creative or as delicious as the one I found at Bill’s.

BlogHer Food 2012 in Seattle

It’s rare for the three of us, my husband, son and I, to go somewhere that none of us has ever been before, so Seattle is a real treat for us. While it is always an advantage to have a member of your group who knows the place, it’s also an adventure to discover somewhere as a family, and Seattle really is a wonderful place to discover. It is almost exactly as I imagined it, a beautiful location where the mountains meet the sea, any of its rough industrial edges smoothed by the relaxed and friendly attitude of the locals.

Meatless Monday - Baked Camembert

Photo courtesy of Made in Provence
Over the years, I have met some wonderful people through The 21st Century Housewife. Christine of Made in Provence is one of them. Christine is always sourcing amazing new products and when I met her at The Spirit of Summer Fair she was eager to share her latest finds. I was very taken by her wonderful Red Wine Jelly. It is the perfect thing to serve with a traditional Provençal favourite, Baked Camembert. This is such an easy appetizer or snack, but it tastes so good everyone always raves about it!
